The pressure for the IT department to take out cost and improve operational efficiency is the main driver for re-appraising how services are delivered to the user. In addition, there is the need to provide access to information from anywhere, ensure data security, regulatory compliance, governance and to become more environmentally friendly.
The technologies that will shape the desktop in the coming years are virtualisation and the growing acceptance of services being delivered over the internet, the latest iteration of this being 'Cloud computing'.
